The Power of Moments: Why Certain Experiences Have Extraordinary Impact

Two of my favorite authors are the Heath brothers, Chip and Dan. Their writing fits my mind in many ways. What I like about their writing is they have an easy to remember theme, then go about populating it with great stories. In this installment, “The Power of Moments”, the simple concept is that you can create powerful, memorable moments using four ideas: Moments of Elevation; Moments of Insight; Moments of Pride and; Moments of Connection. Each one comes complete with a few concepts that are immediately applicable in many situations.

For instance, on page 162, the authors introduce us to Steve Kamb, author of “Level Up Your Life: How to Unlock Adventure and Happiness by Becoming the Hero of your Own Story”. The concept comes from video games in which you conquer ever increasing challenges and you go through the levels. In one level, you may be killing spiders, in the next you may be killing snakes, the next zombies, and so it goes on. Applying the concept to your life is fascinating—what if you “leveled up” when achieving goals? What are the levels of accomplishment that you can reward yourself for as you head towards the goal?

This book is full of gems like that. I enjoyed the book so much that I have sent it to a number of my coaching clients and am going to use in the leadership academies I run. Wouldn’t you love a corporate meeting that was more of a powerful moment that people droning on about initiatives no one cares about? Would you like to be an inspiration for the people you lead? Reading “The Power of Moments” is a good start.
