The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom

I can’t believe it has taken me so long to write this review. It certainly is not a new book, but it is one that I hold dear. I read parts of it often, and use the ideas with all my coaching clients. The heart of Don Miguel Ruiz’s book are the four agreements. They are simple on the surface: be impeccable with your word, don’t take anything personally, don’t make assumptions, and always do your best. It isn’t the agreements that are so special, but the way Ruiz explains each one. Looking through the lens of ancient Toltec wisdom, this book teaches you to break the “old agreements” that have defined you and set and achieve each new agreement.

Take, for instance, “Don’t take anything personally”, my favorite and the one I have the hardest time with. He states “Nothing other people do is because of you. It is because of themselves.” Brilliantly and simply stated, it brings clarity to a difficult concept.

Books have the power to change your life. This one certainly does, if you give it a chance.
